Why do so many women love to be scared?
Plus my pick of the best spine-chilling, horror-filled reads
Even as I’m writing this I wonder if I’m being a bit remiss. Pamela Anderson has left the house without makeup, again, appearing on Drew Barrymore’s show, where Drew was also makeup-free “in solidarity”. Surely I should be writing about that, instead? After all, back when I started The Shift, four years ago, could I have envisaged that high profile women would be doing this voluntarily (as opposed to just being outed nipping to the shops by Peoplemagazine)? I could not. But I already wrote about Pamela’s decision to eschew the slap, and my own relationship with makeup (negligible), when she did it back in the spring. (TLDR: I’m 100% here for it and delighted to see that it wasn’t just a one-off publicity stunt, but each to their own.) And, in all honesty, I’m starting to wonder what we hope to gain by giving it so much oxygen? I mean you don’t see many column inches devoted to Keanu Reeves or Brad Pitt leaving the house foundation-free…
Anyway. I think the world can live without another take from me on the makeup-free debate – and if you’d like to read one,
has some smart thoughts here.In the meantime, I’ve been thinking about the monstrous feminine and what draws us to horror, as well as sharing some of my favourite spine-chillers.
